"Finding people on the Internet was great fun. I had no idea...I would have the success I had. Each find brought new excitement. Each dead end spurred me on to succeed the next time. As for the reunion, I enjoyed seeing people we went to Washington and Fresno High with. Don’t know how to describe it, but they were like relatives. Even if we weren’t best friends, we were in school together a long time. Jim Santos, Joe Sanders. Next time I would like to see Larry Beagle, Carolyn Jacobsen, Carol Ann Milsap..." Angela Petropulous Pappanastos

"When you have a name that is only slightly less common than Joe Smith or John Doe, you get a lot of calls and letters from people searching for old friends, classmates, alimony payments, etc. (Especially around June—class reunion time.) The Internet has added greatly to the number of calls.

Unfortunately, I am not the David M. Thomas who graduated from Fresno High in 1957— although the thought of showing up and pretending to be him crossed my mind ... I mean, after 40 years, who would have known what that David looks like today?

Sorry I am not the David you are looking for. But, by the way, if you happen to run across a David M. Thomas who originally hails from Ohio, let him know that a lot of his old drinking buddies from college have been calling me from all over the USA trying to find him.

Have a nice reunion!" David M. Thomas (not class of ‘57)

(Now that I know where is he) ... "My wife and I hope to get together with classmate Fernie Espinosa in Moscow, Idaho. My 16-year-old son’s school jazz band will be playing at a festival there." Rod Conti

"Have been in touch with Herby Morrison since the reunion. His wife passed away in December ... he is recovering fine. He will be visiting us in Colorado Springs this Labor Day. I e-mail Gloria Driggs West almost every week. Her husband has been very ill but is getting better... he is publishing a book soon." Jef Ferguson

I saw a lot of the ‘old gang’ at an unhappy occasion, the memorial service for Bill Gaines, class of ‘56. The funeral was in Fresno and I had a good chat with Ron Worthly, Pepper Snow, Don Hyberg, Jerry jackson, and Jon Adams (who sang at the memorial service). This was the same day as the mimi-reunion at Dennis Widman’s house.

Other than that, I am in regular touch via e-mail, since the reunion, with Marjorie Farrens and Jim MacLean.

I’m old dog but still learning new tricks. Never thought I’d get into computers as much as I have, but I am now designing traffic engineering software on some major projects here in the Bay Area, and I’ve had to learn all kinds of stuff I’d rather not have learned. I’m nowhere retiring—that’s in 10 years or so." Gary Kruger

"Who would have guessed when we all graduated from FHS in 1957 that we would now be sending ‘instant messages’ to each other by computer? Does that seem possible. Oh, my!! It was a fantastic reunion last year. Everyone who was involved putting it on deserves much credit!!!"

Bruce & Joy Webster

"We stayed with Les Lusk in Bend, Oregon for three days. He and Leon went fishing. They froze their butts off, but they did catch fish!!!." Angela Petropulous Pappanastos

"I received it (the reunion book) the same day I mailed the check. It was wonderful - enjoying it so much. Also got a card from Lorna Royer DuMont—we are having lunch at the Elbow Room. Also got Gary Kruger’s e-mail address from the book and e-mailed him. He’s an old, old friend I’ve known since grammar school, and he e-mailed me back, was great to get in touch with him. We’ll be at the 2002 reunion FOR SURE. Thanks again to you and everyone involved. You all did a great job." Marge Farrens Bourgeois

We as a committee are doing everything we can to keep you informed and make the next reunion even better than the last one...if that’s possible. Our plan is to send you the newsletter, "The Old Hoots & Hooters" at least twice a year. It costs between $300 to $400 for each printing/mailing. Any coins that are burning a hole in your pocket would be greatly appreciated and would help allow future mailings to you and your classmates. Any funds not used for the newsletter will be placed in the reunion account. Please send any financial help to:

We all remember Palmer and LeConte Halls but who remembers "ROYCE HALL"? If you have any idea which building was Royce Hall, please drop us a line.

Did You Know?

Is anyone aware we have a kleptomaniac in our midst? Give up?... it’s our Fresno County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Peter G. Mehas of course. Pete tried unsuccessfully to get the school district to reconsider the partial demolition of Fresno High. Undaunted by a flat refusal, Pete decided to take matters into his own hands. Three days prior to demolition of both Palmer and LeConte halls, Pete took note of the distinctive friezes, decorative architectural panels—all set to be destroyed—and asked construction workers if he could have them. He was told that what he did when no one was around was his business. With a borrowed tool-belt, Pete hung himself out a third-story window, and from 5:30 p.m. Friday until 5:30 a.m. the following Monday, he pounded and chiseled out four friezes. He came down only once, so he says, for a sandwich and a cup of coffee. Today, his valiant efforts are visible in his beautiful new home. Built into the facade of his house and over his magnificent fireplace are the ornate concrete decorative panels that were part of Palmer and LeConte halls.

Pete also has more than 120 Owlet school newspapers, each one laminated and cross indexed on his computer. It was from these and countless other memorabilia that Pete put together the video shown at the classmates only luncheon. As he comments, "When people don’t have a sense of the past, they have no sense of the future." Thanks for the memories, Pete.

Connections

It was a friendship that started the first day of 7th grade in 1951 at Hamilton Jr. High School. For the last 3 - 35 years it’s still going strong ... a core group of five special friends who still keep in touch... Lorna Royer DuMont, Mary Fennacy Lynch, Patti Hayden, Linda Berkholtz Epperly, and Jackie Breckenridge Rogers. They celebrate each others’ birthdays by gathering for lunch ... that’s 5 times per year. In 1993, to celebrate her mon’s 80th birthday, Lorna invited that special group and their moms for a mother & daughter lunch (over the years the moms had also become friends). It was such a success and the moms all had such a great time that Lorna has increased the mother/daughter luncheon to twice a year. Most of the moms are in their 80's ... and we know how old the daughters are.

John Muir School Playground & Girls City League Softball were the beginning for five of these friends ... then at Washington Jr. High School, two more joined the group. Angela Petropulos Pappanastos, Barbara Beagles Foster, Kathleen Rogness Pottol, Elaine Parnagian Sudjian, Josephine Slocum Katayama, Barbara Heath Miller and Leslie Livingstone Fore have gathered together on a somewhat regular schedule for the last 45 years. For the last nine years they have rented a house on the beach each October for a long weekend together. They laugh ‘til they cry, shop ‘til they drop, and are always there to support each other through serious illness and everyday problems ... e-mail now helps them keep in touch.

to help keep the reunion committee updated. We’ve included a post card for your easy return. Please fill it out and send it back—even if you have not stirred from your last known address. That’s our way of knowing we’ve reached you. Only then can we continue to keep in touch.

The post office will only forward mail for 6 months. After that, you’re lost. We’re still looking for 98 ‘lost’ classmates; we’re hoping you’ll keep in touch so we won’t have to search for you too.

Send us your comments, news, or questions. We’d be glad to share them with your classmates in our next newsletter.

JOKE

A concerned husband went to a doctor to talk about his wife. He says "Doctor, I think my wife is deaf because she never hears me the first time and always asks me to repeat things."

"Well," the doctor replied, "go home tonight, stand about 15 feet from her and say something to her. If she doesn’t reply, move about 5 feet closer and say it again. Keep doing this so that we’ll get an idea of the severity of her deafness."

Sure enough, the husband goes home and does exactly as instructed. He starts off about 15 feet from his wife in the kitchen as she is chopping vegetables and says, "Honey, what’s for dinner?" He hears no response.

He moves 5 feet closer and asks again. No reply. He moves 5 feet closer. Still no reply. He gets fed up and moves right behind her, an inch away, and asks again, "Honey, what’s for dinner?"

She replies, "For the fourth time, it’s vegetable stew!"

"I am living right around the corner from Judy Angelo now. Amazing, isn’t it? She just saw Claudia and Mike Noakes last week. I wish everyone from FHS would call me if they are ever on this island (Hawaii). I am already looking forward to the next reunion." Bette Ann Jones Ranagan.

"One surprise (at the reunion) was learning that Paul Myers (who owes me a letter) was flying 747's. When we were running around together in school, he wouldn’t have recognized a 747 if it had landed on him ... Since the reunion, I have re-established ties with Don Hyberg, Gary Kruger and Pepper Snow in addition to a number of others (via e-mail) and now know that they are alive and well. I would hope that others, if they wish to do so, would also feel free to write and at least say hello." James MacLean

"I’m so sorry I couldn’t attend the reunion. It looked like a lovely occasion, although I will admit I really don’t know which of the many lives I’ve led since leaving high school I would have dredged up in reply to the question: what have you done since high school?" Marivee McMath

(Marivee is a cultural anthropologist living in New Zealand.)

"I can’t thank you enough for all the sincere efforts to make it a great weekend ... it was so successful and enjoyable for everyone. I had a chance to speak at length with Jess Lujan, a friend for more than 50 years, and found he has a son, like mine, who competes in the Special Olympics program. We both agreed it was too bad we didn’t know about our sons earlier as it may have helped in the adjustment years. I’m sure there are dozens of stories like this of our classmates who have undergone some tough times ... it takes reunions like ours to bring them together. Thanks again for the wonderful time." The Search Goes On

by Elaine Parnagian Sudjian

I’m still looking for lost classmates using "Are You A Warrior" as e-mail subject title and Internet directories. I’ve made over 65 attempts to contact, Dave Thomas, Doug Hayes, Paul Wrigglesworth, Don Laughlin, Tony Taylor, Jack Files, Don Farmer, Carlton Duncan, Tim Dickey, George Wilson, Gerald Brown, Gary Buckingham, Ron Campbell, Bobby Gann, Bob Williamson, Floyd Wilson, Richard Schmidt... and more.

Many resulted in errors because people had changed their Internet provider. About 12 replied back that they weren’t our classmates (some not even born by ‘57!) and another who responded that he had gone to school with Ozzie Nelson! One Warrior for Christ also replied. From all that ONE success: Doug Hayes found in Parker, CO.

Besides e-mail I’ve also sent out over 36 "Are You a Warrior" letters in search of Ruth Thomas, Dave Thomas, Ann Crawford, James Trent, David Robinson, George Wilson, Bob Williamson, Floyd Wilson, Andy Powers and more.

A lot of research to date is available should you think you’re on the track of a lost classmate. We have information taken from previous reunion books, former addresses, relatives names and addresses, etc.

As an example, where is Mary Ann Zetz (Ward). ‘67=son Barton Lee Ward, Kern City, CA; ‘77=c/o 528 E. Lewis, Fresno; ‘82=lost, ‘87=3015 N. Sierra Vista, #102, Fresno; ‘97 Not 1444 Engle Rd, Lawrence, KS; no response from Barton Ward, 100 Kansas St., Lot 15, Lawrence, KS; or 4712 SW 6th Ave.

If you think you can help, with one name or several, give me a call, or contact me via e-mail. Any clues we might not have, send them along. Parents or siblings’ information helps also.
